Hi, I’m Janelle, a mental health professional with more than 20 years of experience. Inner Joy Therapy is a relatively new practice that I started in Bribie Island, Queensland, a place where there aren’t many mental health support programs or service providers.
My values and compassionate nature drew me to work in the area of psychological health and well-being. It is my mission to support others to find their own self-expression and understand their unique resources and ability to recover.
I am gentle, understanding, and thoughtful. At times, therapy can create discomfort as painful feelings come to the surface. I will be a calm and intuitive presence who will hold a safe space for those personal reflections and walk alongside you as you become more comfortable with your own self and your emotions.
My goal is to always go at your pace and for you to never feel forced to talk about things you do not want to discuss. I will guide you to feel in control and empowered during the therapy process.
Life can be hard, and we are not designed to navigate this on our own. You are making a very positive decision to seek support for yourself or your child.
I welcome and would graciously work alongside people who identify as Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander, those who are culturally or linguistically diverse, and those from the LGBTQIA+ community.
I acknowledge the additional challenges and impacts on mental health that come from structural discrimination.
In my own life, psychology has helped me to make sense of my thoughts and feelings and taught me to be more compassionate to myself as I continue to learn and grow.
Outside of work, I love to dance and enjoy music, animals, and the beach. I strive to live with gratitude and mindfulness to appreciate the small things in life. The most important thing to me is living a spiritual life and connecting with family and friends.
We would work well together if you are an adult of any age looking for a therapist with a more intuitive, flowing, and reflective approach to therapy.
I draw on attachment and psychodynamic theories, and I am informed by Gabor Maté’s Compassionate Enquiry and Internal Family Systems therapy (Swartz and Anderson).
These interoceptive approaches are non-blaming, nonjudgmental, and aim to reshape your relationship with yourself, which leads to lasting healing. What you may have labelled as a problem may, in fact, be a survival strategy, a way that you have adapted to your circumstances.
I am also able to offer more structured and directive therapies, such as cognitive behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and dialectical behaviour therapy, if these are assessed as being a more useful approach for you.
Please get in touch with me to discuss your situation. I would love to hear from you, get to know you, and see if we could work together.
If you are seeking a therapist for your child, I enjoy working with both children and teenagers. Therapy with young people looks very different from therapy with adults.
I work in a variety of ways, generally with more structure and direction and utilise many creative activities, games, and art to assist children to express their internal world and build resilience.
When working with young people, I value working alongside the parent or family system, as research supports that this approach will result in the best outcomes for the child.
I have spent over 15 years working with children and adolescents. I work from an attachment and relationship framework while also drawing on current research, including neurobiology and polyvagal theory.
I help children to put words to their experiences and make sense of the world around them. By building resilience and skills as well as understanding, children can experience positive change that lasts into adulthood.
If you are a health provider, or anyone in a helping role, I can support you with professional supervision. I use a reflective model of supervision practice to help you to explore the impact of your work and the reactions you may have to the people you are working with.
I can also provide a wealth of knowledge in terms of mental health care, therapy approaches, and activities to help you connect and engage more with your clients.
I am generous with sharing my resources and will support you in any way possible so you can continue the important work that you are doing.
Supervision can occur within an individual setting or as a small group with your work colleagues.
I have worked in non-government, government, and private practice settings, so no matter your context, I have had experiences within these work environments and can draw on this to support you in navigating the challenges faced in these environments.
Please connect with me to discuss your situation. I would love to hear from you, get to know you, and see if we could work together.
I am very passionate about working with new and expectant parents and their babies. Focusing support during pregnancy can assist with managing mood and anxiety and provide a safe space to explore feelings about the developing unborn baby.
Specialised parent-infant psychotherapy helps to navigate the exciting new parent-child relationship, promotes child development, builds secure attachment, and increases child resilience.
The perinatal period is known to increase the risk of mental health concerns, therefore, support during this time is vital for the parent and infant in order to promote better mental health.
If you are a new parent and you feel confused or scared by your own powerful emotions, you are unsure of how you feel about your baby, or you have negative thoughts about your baby, please book in for a nonjudgmental exploration of what is very often a normal part of the transition to parenthood.
Specialised parent-infant psychotherapy is very beneficial if you as the parent have experienced your own early losses, separations, abuse, or neglect.
Pregnancy and parenting can also be very triggering if you grew up with parents who were emotionally unavailable, struggled with addictions, or their own mental health. Parent-infant therapy can help you navigate becoming the parent you want to be.
